Equinox Problems

The Chevy Equinox has been a relatively reliable vehicle for most of its production life.  There are a few model years to avoid due to bad head gaskets that would blow without warning (2005, 2006).  We believe it is best to weigh each model year on its own merit.  There are often one year only issues and recalls.

Regardless of the year, the Equinox has been a front or all wheel drive unibody SUV.

Generation 1:  2005-2009

Gen 1 Equinox Problems
1’st Generation Equinox

The first generation of Equinox was GM’s entry into the red-hot (at the time) compact crossover sport utility vehicle segment.  It utilized the AF33 automatic transmission and the 3.4 LNJ or LY7 V6 motors.

There were serious engine problems for the first couple years of the Equinox, they mostly had to do with the head gasket failing without warning.  All years are known to sputter and run rough without having the plugs, wires, and maybe even coils changed around the 100k mark.

Generation Two:  2010-2016

The second generation Equinox was a styling home run.  The mechanics were pretty solid too.  The most prevalent issue with them was the issue of oil consumption in the 4 cylinder motor.  The 2013 model has an issue with the ball on the wipers going bad.  There is a recall on this.
