4L60E Rebuild Kit

Finding the best 4L60E rebuild kit is certainly going to be application dependent.  You really only need as much kit as you have power.  Otherwise, you’re just overpaying.  We’ll help you pick the best 4L60E Rebuild kit for the money and your vehicle.

When selecting a kit, most manufacturers will have a phone number to call and verify that the kit you’ve selected will fit your model.  If that’s not available, use Amazon’s vehicle lookup tool to make sure that you are getting the right rebuild kit for your particular 4L60E.  If you don’t know what year or vehicle the transmission is from, try using the 4L60E ID page.  It contains enough information to help you figure out where it came from.

Do You Need to Rebuild?

If you are positive that you need a rebuild kit, please skip this section.

Before buying a 4L60E rebuild kit, make sure that you actually need to rebuild the thing.  A lot of people who find their way to this site have done transmission swaps or LS swaps.  If that is the case, there may be some issues that have caused your transmission to behave improperly.  If that is the case, you may not need to do a rebuild.  It may just be that the thing is out of tune.  For more on this you should check out:

LS Engine Swap Transmission Guide–  All you want to know about getting an LS motor to work with a modern or old transmission.

Common LS Swap Issues–  This article covers things that can go wrong when doing the LS swap, with an emphasis on the transmission.

The 4L60E is crazy reliable, but it does run into some problems from time to time.  It is notorious for going into limp mode.  Make sure that isn’t the case with you.  Has the transmission light come on lately?  If it has, make sure that you get the code off of it.  It could need a new solenoid or torque converter.  The last thing that you want to do is open the thing up, do all that work and find out that you were wrong about what was going on in the car.  Check out:

4l60e rebuild cost–  This is a quick article that provides good estimates of how much it should cost to have a 4L60E rebuilt.

4L60E Transmission Problems–  This is a good resource for diagnosing issues with the 4L60E.  Maybe you’ll get lucky and it’ll be something easy.

What goes into rebuilding a 4L60E anyway?

A heck of a lot, that’s what goes into it.  I’ve said it on here before, and it bares repeating, automatic transmissions are way more difficult to put build than an engine if you’ve never done it before. This guy does a great job of compressing it into a fifteen minute video. It’s worth a look.

The Budget Option

If you are rebuilding the 4L60E on your Silverado, and having done any sort of modification, you’ll find a kit that contains mostly stock parts to work best for you.  It is always wise to make sure that you are getting the right rebuild kit for your model year.
